Australian crime: Facts & figures 2009 is the AIC's quick reference guide summarising trends in crime and criminal justice in Australia. It includes information on different categories of crime, location, victim and offender details and the response of the criminal justice system. For the first time, this edition includes national data on offenders derived from the first Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) survey to include information on offender characteristics and data on financial instruments fraud.

Trends & issues in crime and criminal justice no. 389 Responding to intimate partner violence victimisation: Effective options for help-seeking
Approximately one in four women in most Western nations are at risk of becoming a victim of intimate partner violence (IPV). Interventions for IPV victims have proven significant in preventing negative outcomes. Using data from the International Violence Against Women Survey, this paper examines predictors of help-seeking by IPV victims and considers whether such responses are influenced by the severity of abuse experienced.

Professor Allan Borowski - presentation now available
Despite the investment of considerable resources over the past two decades, the overrepresentation of Indigenous Australians in the criminal and juvenile justice systems persists. This seminar presents an evaluation of the Children's Koori Court of Victoria, its findings and the considerable challenges encountered in undertaking the study. Professor Allan Borowski currently holds the Chair in Social Work and Social Policy at La Trobe University.

The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) has launched Facts and figures online, an interactive web-based data tool which enables people to analyse and compare crime statistics from the Australian crime: Facts and figures collection. Facts and figures online presents statistics on the numbers and types of recorded crime, their place of occurrence, victim details, responses of criminal justice agencies and government resources for dealing with crime and corrections, to help enhance understanding of the trends and patterns influencing crime and criminal justice in Australia.

AIC survey The impact of policing strategies in and around licensed premises
The Australian Institute of Criminology, in partnership with ACT Policing, is undertaking research into the impact of policing strategies in and around licensed premises. We are surveying community members and local businesses to assess perceptions of safety, views on Canberra's entertainment precincts and information on patron experiences in different types of licensed premises. Australian Bushfire Arson Prevention Initiative
A collaboration of the Monash Sustainability Institute, the Monash Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science and Bond University, and the Australian Institute of Criminology will be holding a two-day symposium to identify key knowledge gaps and establish priorities for advancing national action on bushfire arson prevention. The AIC has produced some significant recent research on bushfire arson prevention available here.
